4 Benefits of buying locally made products
- Economy and society
Anything made in Australia means job opportunities for Australians, and if these products are sold within the country, the dollars continue to circulate in the local economy, which benefits the Australian economy and communities.
- Raw materials and ingredients
In most cases, raw materials and ingredients depend on weather conditions; in other cases, some industries rely on specialised technology and production processes that are not found everywhere. That said, any product made in Australia will be better off if its raw materials and ingredients are sourced locally.
- Transport cost for the environment
We have all heard about the impact transportation fuels have on the environment. Simply put, an imported product travels from their manufacturing location to consumers in Australia. This uses a greater amount of fuel compared to an Australian product, which is made and packaged right here. The transport fuel required would be very little.
- Quality and labour regulations
As with any country, there are quality standards and working condition regulations that all businesses must abide to. Compared to many other places in the world, Australian businesses are assessed to meet high standards of manufacturing quality, and fair-trade regulations are supported and monitored.
When we buy products made overseas, we may be supporting businesses that don’t comply with fair trade conditions in their factories; and in most cases, the products may be lower in cost but may also be of lower quality.
Here are some recommendations on how to grind our beans:
- There are two main types of grinders; blade and burr:
- Choose a burr grinder, not a blade grinder (both hand and electric are fine as long as they grind with burrs).
- A burr grinder is the preferred tool. It has two cutting discs called “burrs”. These discs cut through the beans quickly and with less heat.
- Since burr grinders use slower speeds with less heat, the integrity of the bean remains intact. The burrs also allow for a more precise and consistent grind, which allow for a better brew.
- A blade grinder works like a blender. Blades in the canister spin quickly to chop up the coffee beans. This often creates an inconsistent grind, which is bad news for your coffee.
- Cheap blade grinders also create plenty of heat and friction, which can essentially “burn” your coffee during the grinding process.
- Brewing for espresso? It’s even more critical that your grinds are uniform/consistent. If you use something like a blade grinder, here’s what is like to happen:
- Remember this: grind consistency is the key to a great cup of coffee. If you have an inconsistent brew, the coffee will be extracted at different rates, creating taste variations within the same batch. The more consistent the grind, the better the coffee will taste.
